VERA: verified extraction with region anchoring

In short

VERA (Verified Extraction with Region Anchoring) is the RootNia module that anchors every extracted value to its exact location — document, page and region — in the original. Any answer or extracted field can therefore be traced and verified in one click, turning human review into a quick check instead of a manual search.

The problem: extracted data no one can check

Extracting data from documents with AI is useful until someone asks “where does this amount come from?”. If the only answer is “the model said so”, the value cannot support a decision or an audit, and review means searching the original document by hand.

What VERA does

  • Anchors every value: each extracted value stays linked to its source document, page and region.
  • One-click verification: jump from the answer to the exact part of the document.
  • End-to-end traceability: together with the retrieval log, you can audit which source, classification and LLM produced each answer.

Use cases

Example: from an amount to its source in one click

Illustrative example of how it works, not a specific customer.

An answer states that an invoice total is €12,480. Alongside the value, VERA stores the document, page and region it came from. The reviewer clicks the amount and sees the total line highlighted in the original invoice: if it matches, they confirm it; if not, they correct it knowing exactly where to look.

Limits and good practices

  • Derived values: when an answer combines or calculates values, VERA anchors the source values; the calculation is reviewed from them.
  • Sample-based review: at high volume, review every critical value and a sample of the rest.
  • Audit: keep the retrieval log alongside the decisions that rely on each value.

Compared with template-based extraction

Traditional capture tools extract fields from predefined positions in a template. VERA extracts based on understanding the document and keeps each value’s real location, including in documents with no fixed layout. More in the comparison with ABBYY and Kofax.

Frequently asked questions

What is region anchoring?

Storing, alongside each extracted value, the exact position it came from in the original document. When reviewing an answer, you can jump straight to that region and check the value.

Why does it matter for compliance?

Traceability lets you audit which document grounded each answer. It is a common requirement in regulated environments and one of the foundations of RootNia's governed retrieval.

Does it work with scanned documents?

Yes. After OCR and MIKA's analysis, VERA keeps the reference to the region of the scanned page each value came from.
